Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, recently inaugurated flights connecting five cities in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram.

The government plans to operate two of the flights on the routes Imphal-Aizawl-Imphal, Lilabari-Ziro-Lilabari, and Shillong-Lilabari-Shillong under its Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS).

As part of RCS UDAN, Imphal-Aizawl-Imphal will be connected five times a week, whereas Shillong-Lilabari-Shillong will be connected four times a week. A further report suggests that Alliance Air will operate two flights per week between Lilabari-Ziro-Lilabari. These flights will be operated twice a week.

By enhancing aerial connectivity in the Northeastern part of the country, these flights will contribute to the ease of living for the residents. In addition, they will boost tourism and trade in the region.

During his inaugural remarks, Scindia congratulated the people of the region and noted that this is an extremely significant step towards the establishment of air connectivity throughout the country.

Moreover, the Minister stated that the Union Government has given particular attention to the air connectivity of the Northeast.

Several airports have been built in the region in the past eight years, according to reports.

A total of 14% of routes have been assigned to the northeast under the UDAN scheme. A corpus of INR 500 crores has been set aside to improve air connectivity in the region, and 25 airports have been incentivized as part of Krishi UDAN.

In addition, the Minister announced that under International UDAN, two new routes, Agartala-Chittagong-Agartala and Imphal-Mandalay-Imphal, will become operational to increase air connectivity in the Northeastern states on a national level.
