After two years of keeping its borders closed, Myanmar now allows tourists to apply for e-visas. The country will soon allow tourists access to Myanmar. All governments around the world advise citizens to avoid any travel to Myanmar due to the ongoing military coup. In light of the ongoing troubles in Myanmar, activists urge foreigners not to travel.

The Immigration and Population Ministry announced that the online e-visa service for tourist visa applications will be resumed on May 15, 2022.

According to reports, the decision was made after the country resumed international commercial flight operations on April 17 and opened its borders to international travelers.

Activist groups are warning about the military’s vested interest in the economy of Myanmar, including tourism, banks, mines, and petroleum. This means that tourist dollars could also end up in the coffers of the junta. Justice for Myanmar, an activist group, stated that foreign tourists should avoid transport and hotels owned by the Myanmar military or their associates. However, the visa fees, tax, and insurance will continue to fund the junta. They urged anyone who was planning to visit Myanmar to boycott.

After decades of military rule, democracy in Myanmar was established in 2011. It has since become a popular tourist destination.

According to reports, the tourism industry was also affected by the pandemic. However, clashes between security forces, anti-coup fighters, and security forces, which followed the military takeover have also impacted the sector, leading to many foreign firms leaving the country.
