Goa to Host Ironman’s Third Edition on October 8

Ironman Edition Goa

Goa is excitedly preparing to host the third installment of the global Ironman triathlon on October 8. This event, deemed one of the world’s most grueling single-day sports contests, will see about 1,200 triathletes from 30 different nations converge in Goa.

The Ironman 70.3 race spans 140.6 miles. The athletes will start with a 1.9 km swim at Miramar Beach, proceed to a 90 km bike segment, and wrap up with a 21.1 km run in Panaji, the state’s capital.

Coordinating the Ironman 70.3 is no small feat. An enormous team of 1,200, inclusive of 700 volunteers, will manage the event. Athletes will have access to 23,000 liters of water and 21 tons of ice from eight aid stations throughout the race. Though there are mechanics on call, athletes should attend to minor bike repairs. Ensuring road safety and overseeing traffic, especially in Goa’s central areas, will be quite the undertaking.

Goa’s reputation as a coveted tourist spot made it the chosen location for Ironman India. Accessibility, diverse lodging choices, and the region’s appeal played pivotal roles in this decision. Goa’s commitment to maintaining beach cleanliness and the local government’s support for road closures further cemented its status as the preferred host city, as noted by Deepak Raj, Yoska’s CEO, and Ironman’s Indian franchise holder.

The Ironman isn’t just for the pros. It attracts a vast demographic, from army personnel to business executives and teenagers. Noteworthy entrants include 70-year-old Aries Kharas and 66-year-old Pervin Batliwala, the oldest male and female competitors. Another notable participant is former men’s champion Bishworjit Saikhom. The states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Haryana boast the most entrants, highlighting the event’s widespread appeal.

Athletes’ prep involves consuming carbohydrate-heavy foods a day ahead to stock up on energy. Proper salt and electrolyte intake is vital. After the race, easy-to-digest foods like rice aid in recovery. To assist those in smaller cities, Deepak Raj launched an app for remote Ironman training.

Interestingly, the number of female contenders in Ironman 70.3 India has been on an upswing, with 200 women in this year’s lineup. Measures like coaching discounts have boosted female enrollment.

Among the participants is Susan Hunt Thapar, a 66-year-old Australian ex-sports tourism professional and swim coach with an admirable triathlon record. Her training weekends are full, focusing on bike care, early sleep, and minimal social outings.
